Honestly, I don't (anymore!). These days, I will usually just grab a piece of Rhodia paper and do a few lines of drills to warm up my hand if I'm about to do a project. But I'm so confident in my own style and my calligraphy skills now that I don't do intentional sit-down alphabet practice or anything. I just consider my project-making time to be my practice time, if that makes sense! β That said, when I was starting out and learning calligraphy, I absolutely did. I would do at least a full line or two of each basic stroke to warm up, and then I'd usually sit in front of the tv and just write words or names that people said in whatever I was watching! Just writing for the sake of writing and exploring styles as I did! β When I was trying to discover my own style and what my preferences were, too, I'd often find other people's writing and spend a practice session just trying to emulate it in my own notepad (NOT for sharing, just for practice!). Then I'd take note of what I did and didn't like about that style and learn little pieces of it to incorporate into my own style.
