Hi, I'm Becca Courtice, a modern calligrapher and instructor from Ottawa, Ontario β€” I'm here to teach you everything I know! πŸ‘‹

Happy July Reader!

This week has been so much fun - celebrating Canada Day, prepping for ShowMeYourDrills (we start Monday!), and working on some fun things behind the scenes. 😏

ShowMeYourDrills, my free beginners calligraphy course, is back, and we start on Monday! I am seriously SO excited to bring it back after two years, and I can hardly wait to kick off next week. If you're interested, you can read more details below!

For this week's new video, I critiqued my own calligraphy! I'm also sharing some clarification on the differences between calligraphy, fonts, and hand lettering.

If you have ANY questions just hit reply 😊

ShowMeYourDrills Starts on Monday!!

My free calligraphy course, ShowMeYourDrills, is kicking off a brand new semester on Monday (July 7th).

This is the first time it's been open for enrollment since 2023!

We start from the very basics– you don't need ANY experience with calligraphy or art, and your current handwriting does not matter.

In the free course, you'll get:

βœ”οΈ Full access to an online course portal (just like a paid course, but it's free!)

βœ”οΈ 20+ videos

βœ”οΈ Supplies PDF guide
βœ”οΈ Full printable, traceable workbooks
βœ”οΈ Access to a private FB group (and 5 "mentors" to help answer your questions!)

βœ”οΈ The very best (& most supportive) community of other beginners to learn with

The new semester starts on Monday - I hope to see you there!

Critiquing My Own Calligraphy

Every week inside my Patreon community, I share a lettering challenge - a set of calligraphy practice words.

This week, I wrote the words myself and critiqued my own lettering!

Yep, red marker and all. πŸ˜…

It’s a really powerful way to improve your lettering, and I wanted to show you exactly how I do it.

Find the full video at the link below!

Just a quick reminder: Paid members inside Patreon get early, ad-free access to all my new YouTube videos!

What's the Difference?!

Calligraphy. Hand Lettering. Fonts.

What's the difference?!

In this video, I break down and explain alllll the terms that might be confusing (especially for beginners!).

Ask Me Anything!

Have a question you want answered? Click the link below to submit your question! I'll answer one each week right here in my weekly newsletter.

This is a VERY hard question to answer, because it can vary so much from person to person. The only general instruction I can give here is to make sure you feel confident in the quality of your basic strokes (they're not shaky, they're fairly consistent, the shapes look correct, etc) before trying letters. Consistency in your strokes is key, because if they're not consistent then your letters won't be either - and you'll get frustrated!

Then, give your letters a try. If they look wonky, it's almost a guarantee that it's because your basic strokes weren't consistent/practiced enough!! Go back and practice more until the basic strokes are solid muscle memory.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, YOUR WEEKLY DAD JOKE!

Why did the knife get dressed up?
Because it wanted to look sharp!
